Investigating Simple Organisms: Life Science

For plenty of centuries, scientists believed there have been purely kingdoms, or teams of dwelling issues: vegetation and animals. yet Anton van Leeuwenhoek made microscopes within the seventeenth century that still proved there are microorganisms, or microbes. Microbes may help maintain humans remain fit, yet a few may make humans in poor health.

A flare is a huge release of energy created when magnetic field lines looping through the solar corona reconnect or ‘short-circuit’ at a lower level. The event heats the surrounding electrically charged plasma up to 10 to 20 million degrees Celsius (18 to 36 million degrees Fahrenheit) causing it to emit intense radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, and also accelerating subatomic particles such as protons and electrons to speeds close to that of light. These particles escape the Sun still travelling at tremendous speed, and give rise to ‘radiation storms’ as they pass the planets.

Some of these tornadoes are as long as 800 kilometres (497 miles), or about a third of the planet’s size. Before Mariner 10 flew by Mercury, it was thought not to have a magnetic field at all. The current theory is that it is caused by a dynamo, much like Earth’s magnetic field, which means that the planet has an outer core of electrically conducive, rotating molten iron. Not all scientists agree that Mercury is capable of generating a dynamo, however. Plains There are both smooth and rolling or hilly plains, which may be the result of either volcanic activity or impacts Scarps These steep cliffs can occur due to either erosion or compression within the planet’s interior Mercury mapped by Mariner Caloris Basin Not only is Caloris the largest impact crater on the planet at 1,550 km (960 miles) in diameter, it’s one of the largest ones in the Solar System Sobkou Planitia This plains region is home to several craters.

27m deep (73in x 56in x 50in) Mission: Studying magnetic field, geology, and chemical make-up Flybys: One of Earth, two of Venus, three of Mercury Initial discoveries: Mercury’s magnetic field is offset far to the north of centre, with a stronger gravitational pull in the northern hemisphere; volcanic activity Antenna The antenna receives commands and data from Mission Control EPPS The Energetic Particle and Plasma Spectrometer is actually two spectrometers in one MDIS The Mercury Dual Imaging System comprises two different cameras to take images of Mercury’s surface XRS X-Ray Spectrometer detects light on the X-ray spectrum on the wavelength of minerals including magnesium, aluminium, sulphur, calcium, titanium and iron Solar panel GRNS The Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectrometer measures variations in gamma rays emitted by atoms and neutrons when struck by cosmic rays MAG The magnetometer extends on a three-metre (ten-foot) boom so it can measure Mercury’s magnetic field without interference from Messenger’s own magnetic field Mercury’s solar panels provide 640 watts of power, stored aboard 11 nickel hydrogen batteries “Messenger is the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury, and has already revealed a lot of information about the planet in its short duration” 51 The planets 52 Venus All About… VENUS Venus is the most Earth-like planet in the Solar System, but there are a few key differences between the two planets, such as clouds of acid and temperatures hot enough to melt lead.
