EXTRAS: Season 1: Gag reel; unaired pilot; Season 2: Episodes of ALF’s Animated Adventures and ALFTales. 0 A few episodes of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense anthology series had previously turned up in DVD collections of the director’s film classics, but Season 1 is the first release devoted solely to the television show, and the best place to begin one’s collection. The story quality was not as consistently head spinning as The Twilight Zone, but when the material was there, as in the show’s many adaptations of classic short stories, Hitchcock presented some very memorable tales indeed.

Ironically, the series hit its stride when it was at its most vulnerable, in the “Shadow War” epic of Seasons 3 & 4. The excellent DVD collections, overseen by Straczynski, finally give Babylon 5 the attention it never received during the original run. GREAT MOMENTS: Season 1: Star Trek’s Walter Koenig embraces the dark side in “Mind War”; “Signs and Portents” sets many of the series’ principal plots in motion; Season 2: John Sheridan arrives in “Points of Departure”; the pivotal “In the Shadow of Z’Ha’Dum”; Season 3: Babylon 5 secedes from the Earth Alliance in “Severed Dreams”; the two-part adventure “World Without End”; Season 4: The preparations for war in “Into the Fire” and “No Surrender, No Retreat”; Season 5: The Neil Gaiman–scripted “Day of the Dead,” featuring magicians Penn and Teller.

J. 2 status with this spy/intrigue series about a college student who moonlights as a secret agent. The show’s first three years include cliffhangers at the end of nearly every episode, but the show adopted a more self-contained format with Season 4, which didn’t sit well with many fans. Sydney Bristow’s school and personal life were also phased out as the series progressed. In addition to Garner’s appeal, Alias boasted outstanding performances from Ron Rifkin as the duplicitous Arvin Sloane and Victor Garber as Sydney’s “spy daddy,” Jack Bristow.
